Beatmatching - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Beatmatching was originally employed by DJs by Francis Grasso in the late 60's/early 70's.
For a DJ wishing to beatmatch using vinyl turntables, the general procedure involved is relatively simple to explain, but difficult to master.
More recently, technology has been developed that allows DJs to use actual vinyl records to manipulate mp3s and other digital tracks stored on their computer hard drives to produce the same effects.

A Taxonomy of DJs - Beatmatching
In order to beatmatch, the DJ must use two ears, one listening to the track that the audience is hearing and one listening to the upcoming track.
Beatmatching is the act of synchronizing two musical beats so that they are in phase as well as in time.
When mixing music from one track to another, the transition between tracks can appear seamless if the beats are lined up to be in the same time.

Beatmatching is used to make transitions from song to song much smoother than just playing one song over the next and fading the volumes.
Without beatmatching, DJ's would just be jukeboxes playing one song after the other and that is what someone like you (an aspiring superstar DJ) does not want to become.
Beatmatching is simply taking two songs and matching their Beats Per Minute (a.k.a.

Progressive dance music - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Most electronic dance music tracks released are produced with certain features that are favourable for DJs to beatmatch records togher with an almost seamless sound to it.
Progressive dance music (occasionally progressive electronic dance music or prog) is a collection of electronic music genres which draw upon the concepts of progressive music and include the subgenres of progressive trance, progressive house, progressive techno and progressive breaks.
Unlike the obvious song structures of genres like hard house or Hi-NRG, the peaks and troughs in a progressive dance track tend to be less obvious.

Beatmatching in a nutshell is taking two tunes whether from a CD or a Vinyl and getting them to play at the same speed where you can switch from one to the other.
Even though your other record is perfectly beatmatched, if you drop the record in at a point where something changes, especially a string of vocals it could wreck the mix - not always but a lot of the time.
I know it's annoying listening to Juleseys seamless mixing live from Ibiza and then when you feel confident and put your own decks on it sounds like a herd of African elephants are rampaging through the room.

 Timothy Wisdom - D'Groove
This information is useful for beatmatching two songs so that they can be mixed into a single musical output.
D'Groove is able to break the rule assigned in the visual beatmatching aid (described above), allowing any amount of music to playback during any amount of turntable movement.
This is useful for beat juggling as you can feel your way around the music instead of looking at markers on the record.

 BeatMatching 101 by Jonny Thrice
Beatmatching or beat mixing is the backbone of all DJing.
If done correctly, both records should now be in sync, 1-2-3-4, 1-2-3-4, etc. Practice this until you feel ready to bring in a record in at the right time.
If you've ever taken a good look at some of the top DJ's doing their thing, you'll notice that the only time the ever touch their records is when cueing them up!

 Middle East Open Encyclopedia: DJ
Francis Grasso (1948-2001), popularized several new disc jockey techniques, including beatmatching and slip-cueing.
There are several techniques that can be applied by the disc jockey as a means to manipulate the prerecorded music.
Grasso also perfected slip-cueing, the technique of holding a record still while the turntable is revolving underneath, releasing it at the desired moment to create a sudden transition from the previous record.

 Digital Mixing Ideas
If we automate beatmatching, then the tasks of the DJ are simplified to track selection, knowning when to start new tracks and knowing how to mix multiple tracks so that they sound coherent with each other.
Given that all dance music follows a 4/4 beat pattern, we can detect which beat (within a set of 4) has occurred by listening to any group of 4 beats and detecting which one (of the 4) is the initial beat (downbeat) of the set of 4.
Lots of DJs do not even know the concept of a 4/4 beat and often do not get their beats in phase when making a mix.

But this CD isn't about beatmatching - it's about taking the listener on a musical journey which glides above the guard rails of genre.
Larry was so careful about his programming that he would only play songs with similar lyrical themes back to back and always put in some sort of break when switching from one lyrical theme to another.
This CD is required listening for every house music fan.

The key to beatmatching is to run the beats of two different tracks at the same time so they sound synchronized and smooth.
The original way to play the music is through two turntables and a mixer although CD decks have become increasingly popular.
Try to ensure that you pick two records with distinct beats so it is easier to beatmatch.

Once the beats are matched, you want to listen to see if they start to drift apart.
If they start to drift apart you have to listen to see if it's because the second record is too fast or too slow.

If the person has the skills to understand their music and know which kind of songs go best together, and can create a solid tracklisting where all the tracks compliment each other.
I think the problem here is we are trying to pinpoint where a good DJ starts...good DJ'ing is a combination of both mixing and track selection.
I'd be more likely to enjoy a mix with all unknown or old songs that are mixed well and have great skills from the DJ, than a new upfront tracklisted demo that sucks as far as mixing and skills go.

G.S.P. Magazine - SO, You Want To Be A DJ???
Since you can beatmatch record #2 in the comfort of your headphones, your mix will (hopefully) sound beatmatched by the time you are bringing the volume up on #2 (thus, releasing #2 into the speakers with #1, creating a mix).
-Ideally, if you are playing record #1 and you are mixing record #2 into it, you will want to have #2 beatmatched before you 'insert' #2 into the mix, so to speak.
You probably know that to play a record, you rotate it underneath a needle which reads the music.

The majority of clubbers are there for the music, atmosphere and to dance - not to hear how well the DJ beatmatched (except chin-strokers and other DJ's).
Its hard to judge at this point, look how long cd's have been around on the DJ scene, admittedly this has only recently matured in the professionaly DJ market in terms of truly useful CD DJ Tools such as the Pioneer CDJ1000's, which have promoted the CD as a viable alternative to vinyl.
If a dj cannot stand up in front of a crowd and perform an improvised mix in realtime, beatmatching by ear then they are not 'dj's' in my book.

There is no beatmatching (I take it that's what you meant as well), but a98 has already said exactly why that is. You need at least a beat or a rhythmic something to mix songs that way and with this sort of music you just can't do that.
Still, "CTG Electronica Compilation" just doesn't have that same ring to it and technically I did "mix" the songs together, only without the beatmatching part.

 DISCORDER The DJ School
Turntablism at its fullest has several different aspects of control: tactile (physical manipulation of the vinyl), spatial (effects and processing), frequential (EQ manipulation), compositional (ordering and choice of the tracks), and auditory (the volume of the track, and use of silence, such as in cutting).
All of this is combined in the mix, which is the blending of the records using the above techniques through the further skill of beatmatching and compositional arrangement (when to drop the track, and how, and at what volume, and how quickly to bring it in, etc.).
By gathering students and teachers together, the DJ school contributes toward creating a community of sorts, albeit one mediated by money; or at least trying to recreate what is now a somewhat dead community through commercial means; and, like the DJ record store, provides a focal point for the wider music community.
