beat juggling - dj forums - The Worldwide DJ Community
Beat juggling is exactly what it sounds like: manipulating, “juggling,” and combining the existing elements of two records to create a new rhythmic composition; a new “beat.” Basic beat juggling ideas include looping, fills, the breakdown, and the more difficult strobe and double-click.
After scratching, beat juggling is the second basic turntablist style of musical expression.

 CHECK: ONE-TWO
If you want to be a deft beat juggler and you have the basic beat-juggling skills down (see “Turntablist Techniques: Vinyl Drummer,” October 2003), you need to learn some advanced methods to become a master of the beats.
One of the great ways to practice some of the crossfader skills required for beat juggling is to perform drills using the echo scratch (see “Turntablist Techniques: Could You Repeat That?” October 2002), which requires two copies of the same record.
This is a fairly simple juggle to learn once you grasp the concept, but it has an impressive sound.

 Disc_jockey
The common element of most house music is a 4/4 beat generated by a drum machine or other electronic means (such as a sampler), together with a solid (usually also electronically generated) bassline.
There are several techniques that can be applied by the disc jockey as a means to manipulate the prerecorded music.
Grasso also perfected slip-cueing, the technique of holding a record still while the turntable is revolving underneath, releasing it at the desired moment to create a sudden transition from the previous record.

 SIMULATED SKINS
Battle-break albums are a good source of “drummable” beats because the creators of the those albums often include specific beat combinations that are especially useful for drumming.
A simplified version of beat juggling (the manipulation of two records simultaneously), drumming is a good technique to master if you want to become proficient at beat juggling.
Listen to (traditional) drummers and think about what they are doing as they play a beat.

The term "turntablist" describes an individual who uses the turntables not just to play music, but to actually manipulate sounds and beats on a record, and create their own music or sounds to it.
You have mixing, scratching, beat juggling, dissing, and the turntable band.
These two terms were adopted by the International Turntablist Federation in 1996 to separate regular disc jockeys from those who actually create music using the turntables.

Obvious comparisons with DJ Shadow and Mowax can be made here, and without sounding insulting, this is a great album of background music beats.
The album was made with a combination of the modern, conventional method of cutting and pasting breaks using computers and samplers, and of Smaze's DIY technique of pause-button recording - this is literally when he plays a beat on a tape recorder, pressing the pause button on and off to achieve artificial beat-breaks.
