Baritone - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
In music, a baritone (from Greek βαρυτονος 'deeply, heavily sounding') is a male voice of intermediate pitch, between bass and tenor.
The baritone singer is often the one required to support or 'fill' the bass sound (typically by singing the fifth above the bass root).
In barbershop music, the baritone part sings in a similar but somewhat lower range to the lead (singing the melody), but has a specific and specialised role in the formation of the four-part harmony that characterises the style.

 Operapaedia - Reference Desk
The 'Verdi baritone' is now considered its own voice type, and the singer must have an incredibly dynamic quality, a dark color, 'bite' or 'snarl' in order to carry through the orchestra and the ability to sing lyrically when called upon.
The 'tessitura' or 'lie' of these roles is higher than what a bass can comfortably sing with occasional moments of probing into the bass register and the need for the darkness of color that the bass brings to a role.
We have Verdi to thank for the 'discovery' and codification of the baritone voice-type, so excited was he about the particular color of this voice and its ability to portray many different dramatic qualities.

Bass-baritone - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
A bass-baritone is a singing voice that shares certain qualities of both the baritone and the bass.
For example, the role of Wotan in Die Walküre covers the range from the F# above middle C to the F below the bass clef but only infrequently descends beyond the C below middle C. The term is also used to refer to a singer who possesses such a singing voice.
The term arose in the late 19th century to describe the particular type of voice required to sing Wagnerian bass roles like Wotan (in the Ring Cycle) and Hans Sachs (in Die Meistersinger von Nürnberg).

The Pirates of Penzance SavoyNet Discussion
There are a number of different weights possible for a bass-baritone, and for the most part, a middle weight bass-baritone is dark enough (bassy enough if you will) for most GandS parts.
Baritones are yet another step up the spectrum, and usually are required to be able to carry a lighter colour down into the lower parts of the bass clef, but it is rare to find a baritone with an extension which goes down into ledger lines below the bass clef.
To me a Bass role suggests the roles with the lowest bottom range, the lowest tessitura (essentially the average place where it sits) and the darkest colour.

REVIEW / Quasthoff is a seriously fine artist / Bass-baritone sings Brahms, Schubert
His stunning account of "Swing Low, Sweet Chariot" -- all bluesy freedom, sweet high notes and rumbling bass notes -- was framed by two little comic scenes, Schubert's "Heidenroslein" and "Die Forelle" ("The Trout").
In the evening's funniest and most serendipitous stroke, the latter song was greeted by the sound of an enormous tray of glassware crashing to the ground in a nearby banquet room; the crash was timed perfectly to the last note of the song.
Not until the encores did the audience really get to see the lighter side of Quasthoff's artistry.
