Now consisting of Alexander with Willie Hall (drums), Winston Stewart (organ), Barry Wilkins (guitar), Vernon Burch (guitar), Harvey Henderson (sax) and vocalist Larry Dodson, the Bar- Kays developed a reputation as a fierce live outfit, which was briefly documented on the Wattstax concert.
Just as their career was beginning to take off, all of the Bar Kays except bassist James Alexander and trumpeter Ben Cauley were killed in the plane crash that claimed Otis Redding.
The Memphis band began as a backing band for Stax, and recorded their own hit "Soul Finger" in 1967.

The Bar-Kays : Contagious - Listen, Review and Buy at ARTISTdirect
Things were basically a lost cause for The Bar-Kays by the time they issued this album in 1987.
Audiences were now solidly into rap, New Jack Swing-styled R&B or smoother, more sophisticated urban contemporary material, and The Bar-Kays weren't able to cover any of those bases.
This is among the last albums they did for a major label.

Besides the mayors, others in attendance that night included civic leaders such as Henry Turley and John and Pat Tigrett, and, of course, the city's musical elite such as the Bar-Kays and Jim Dickinson.
What has always made Memphis a hotbed for musical activity in the first place is that it is the only real urban center for 300 miles in any direction, a magnet for the agrarian poor and disenfranchised who have often created the greatest art.
Memphis is a home for the world's misfits, nonconformists, and stragglers.

Mass Hibsteria - TEN DAYS THAT SHOOK THE WORLD
Anyhow, this is my ten favourite days as a Hibs fan, since I became ‘Hibernian conscious’ around 1978, in case anybody is interested To ‘30-something international playboys’ (you know the kind of thing, a couple of pints in the Roseburn, Kays bar etc.) it may strike a cord at least.
Or the Green-and-Yellys, as they were that day, which seemed to heighten my sense of confusion at the whole affair, as Hibs chose to wear their flashy new change strip for the STV cameras.
Incidentally, that booking for Gordon Rae kept him out of the big match at Hampden, and he knew it the instant the yellow card was produced, much like Paul Gascoigne in the 1990 world cup.
