The composer Mili Balakirev was a dynamic leader of the Russian nationalist school of music of the late 19th century.

Nevertheless Balakirev found difficulty in supporting himself, although the death of Ulibishev in 1858 brought him a legacy of 1000 roubles, two violins and his patron's music library.
Entry to the musical world of St. Petersburg was effected when Ulibishev took Balakirev there in 1855, introducing him to Glinka, the great pioneer of Russian music, and allowing him the opportunity to give public concerts, with considerable success.
Rimsky-Korsakov, who had dared to attend Belyayev's Friday evenings, instead of Balakirev's musical Tuesdays, was accused of selling himself for thirty pieces of silver to Satan, who, disastrously for Russian music, appeared in the form of M.P. Belyayev.

Piano Society - Balakirev - Islamey
Influenced by the Oriental music of the East, Balakirev's Islamey is a work in three parts.
The Oriental Fantasy "Islamey" by Mili Balakirev has assumed an infamous and yet irresistible reputation in the piano repertoire.
Live performance of this work is risky for even the most hardened concert pianist, but the electrifying nature of the work renders every risk worthwhile.

Balakirev’s other big love was conducting and was he elated when the Russian Music Society invited him to conduct their symphonic programs.
Balakirev was also well endowed as a teacher, always able to bring out his friends’ best musical abilities.
Despite his young age, he was very well heeled in music history and theory, knew much about the existing musical styles and composition and regularly played concerts as a pianist and conductor.

Classical Net Review - Balakirev - Symphonies & Tone Poems
Balakirev was reportedly an obstinate person, and disinterested in forward musical trends.
Russian conductor Evgeny Svetlanov has recorded the symphonies of Mili Balakirev (1837-1910) at least twice (with the USSR Symphony first and more recently with the Philharmonia), but these new recordings featuring his orchestra, the State Symphony of Russia, are directed by assistant conductor Igor Golovschin.
Though I'd read of Balakirev's place in Russian music history, and probably had heard the symphonies before but couldn't recall anything about them, the time was obviously right to acquaint myself with the composer.

Balakirev, together with Cui, Borodin, Mussorgsky and Rimsky-Korsakov were called "The Mighty Handful" or simply "The Five"; they steered Russian composition away from the European school and uncloaked native Russian melodies to the international musical world.
However, this cycle of Balakirev's complete pieces for piano is an excellent introduction to Balakirev's talent and art, and is a good recommendation for anyone who wishes to explore Nationalist Russian music before Rachmaninov and Scriabin.
The first volume of Paley's Balakirev (right) cycle opens with two of Balakirev's largest-scale, and probably most well-known, piano works: Islamey and the Fantasia on Themes from Glinka's "A Life for the Tsar" (which Glinka and audiences alike took to immensely).

But being almost as fine a pianist as Balakirev himself, it is in his works for solo piano, piano and orchestra and songs with piano accompaniment that his excellence as a composer is best demonstrated.
Balakirev felt that Lyapunov’s slow movement should be in a key which contrasted with E flat minor, and suggested B major or D major.
In December Lyapunov conducted a concert in Berlin in Balakirev’s memory, and it was Balakirev’s concerto rather than his own which was performed.

Tchaikovsky did not condemn "program music à la Berlioz," nor was he antipathetic to Balakirev, despite the rather condescending and admonitory tone of Balakirev's encouragements.
He indicated two stumbling blocks: the inhibiting power of his affection for Schumann's Manfred music, and, most important, a lack of any familiarity with the Byron poem.

Invariably, one may sense similar notes in the music of his friends from the Mighty Five: “Scheherazade”, “The Polovetsk Dances” and many others – the composers of the union revealed an obvious fascination for Oriental music, music of the Caucuses, as well as that of other peoples.
