Bad Religion - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Bad Religion is an influential punk rock band known for poignant, erudite lyrics, and biting social commentary.
In 1981, the band released their eponymous debut EP on their own newly-formed label, Epitaph Records, which is managed and owned by Gurewitz.
Bad Religion returned to a somewhat mellower, rock and roll version of their original sound with the Back to the Known EP, but they disbanded soon after.

Bad Religion survived the genre's dry spells, and though they have not reaped the monetary success or mainstream popularity of many of the bands they inspired, such as Offspring or Green Day, they are much more respected and recognized as punk veterans who have spent 16 years at the center of the punk scene.
Bad Religion's intelligent "thesaurus rock" can still hold its own with the next generation of punk bands and fans.
Though the show was packed with the usual two-minute punk anthems and crowd surfing, it lacked the blatant stupidity and rebellious antics of younger (or more desperate) punk bands.

Interview with Greg Graffin of Bad Religion (NY Rock)
Bad Religion, the role models for many second generation punk bands such as Green Day and Offspring, have cultivated over 18 years worth of poignant lyrics and fast, melodic punk &; and they’re still in their early 30s.
They continue, however, to run the organization known as Bad Religion which, in addition to recording and performing tunes, runs its own merchandising line, produces unknown bands for free, and funds a research grant for promising college students.
Without the backing of a major label, the band has managed to build a devout and steadily growing fan base over the years (including Pearl Jam’s Eddie Vedder, who appears on their 1993 album Recipe for Hate).

Brett Gurewitz, co-founding member of the band is back, they've returned to Epitaph, the label that loves them best and that they have always called home and their latest album, "The process of belief" is, after a few years of forgettable releases, a fine return to form.

Bad Religion have been stunning the music world by mixing thought, melody, attitude, speed and ability since 1980, when Graffin, Gurewitz and Bentley formed the band in suburbs of L.A.'s San Fernando Valley.
In an era where major labels refused to consider American punk groups, Gurewitz formed Epitaph Records as a medium for the band's message and a crudely recorded self-titled EP was born.

Bad Religion along with lablemates Pennywise are my favorite US punk bands (in the UK, The Exploited rule by their last 2 albums alone!) I love all of Bad Religion's music, even the stuff they had on major label Atlantic was awesome!
There are fewer short-burst punk anthems, which is a good thing, IMO; BR is obviously evolving as a band, and letting the lyrics take center stage instead of the punk aesthetic.

The plethora of mid-tempo (by Bad Religion standards) rockers make the band sound plodding ("Raise Your Voice", "The Hippy Killers") and with no strong melodies it often sounds like hardcore at the wrong speed.
Inspirational in its work and achievement, able to accept major-label involvement without allowing interference, Bad Religion defies the genre's typical preaching-to-the-converted limits by offering two reasons to believe: the invigorating music's raw, atavistic power sets fire to one audience while the lyrics' thoughtful sophistication can speak to and hold the attention of another.
