Bad Brains - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The Bad Brains are arguably the first hardcore punk band.
The Bad Brains are an American all-black hardcore punk and reggae band, originally formed in Washington, DC in 1977.
Originally formed as a jazz fusion ensemble, the Bad Brains developed a very fast and intense punk rock sound, which was both musically complex and more extreme than most of their punk rock contemporaries.

 The Bad Brains
While the Bad Brains always played some reggae songs on their albums, it was usually at most a 75% hardcore to 25% reggae mix.
The Bad Brains are to hardcore as Chuck Berry was to Rock and Roll — black guys who forever changed the way we look at a genre of music but seem to have been missed by the mainstream.
For those few of you not in the know, the Bad Brains started out as an all black Jazz Fusion/Reggae band that stumbled on to some Ramones and Sex Pistols albums and quickly became the best hardcore band ever to grace the Earth.

Rastafarians from Washington DC by way of New York City, Bad Brains play a groundbreaking, incendiary mixture of raging hardcore punk, deftly thudding metal and heartfelt, liquid reggae, bristling with spiritual fervor.

Bad Brains: Banned in D.C.: Bad Brains Greatest Riffs - PopMatters Music Review
Not only did Bad Brains master the full-throttle speed of hardcore punk, but, super-skilled musicians that they were, they also managed to blend that unrelenting barrage of noise with such seemingly disparate musical influences as jazz fusion, reggae, and funk, creating a highly distinctive sound that no band has managed to match since.
Hardcore punk pioneers Bad Brains were an anomaly in 1979, and remain one still today.
Easily one of the most ferocious bands in the history of American punk, the band offered fans something a bit different than what they were all used to.

The new album, which continues the Brains' efforts to meld punk, metal and reggae, also reunites the band with former Cars frontman Ric Ocasek, who produced 1983's "Rock for Light," arguably the definitive Brains release.
The Brains do manage a few surprises, notably on the bouncy, preachy "Rights of a Child," which interrupts such commonplace pronouncements as "Every life is priceless" with a pounding metal chorus and a spacy guitar solo.
Clearly the Brains, who will play a free show tomorrow at Tracks, take seriously the praise-Haile Selassie message of "To the Heavens" and "Thank Jah." The band's last album didn't work out, Jenifer told Billboard, because of "an unfortunate mismatch of vibe and spirit.

All material on this CD was recorded at 171-A Studios, NYC, during August, September and October 1981, except "Pay To Cum," "I Luv I Jah" and "Jah Calling Dub" recorded live at 171-A on May 16, 1981.

The Bad Brains, combining the urgency and bombast of punk with the soul of reggae, burst onto the D.C. and New York City club scene with an innovative and exciting new sound.

In their prime, the Brains would seamlessly switch from the most hepped-up hardcore mania to an equally powerful heavy dub groove, revving the crowd up to a frenzy with songs like "Pay to Cum," and then soothing the wired beasts with soulful tracks like "Leaving Babylon."
Following a support tour for 1995's God of Love, during which vocalist HR punched out the band's manager, these progenitors of punk/reggae fusion parted ways for the umpteenth time in their nearly twenty-year career.
But during this set, "Pay to Cum" was lumped at the beginning with equally frantic tracks like "At the Movies" and "House of Suffering." Then the band began to settle in with the mid-paced "Reignition," "Sacred Love," and "Soul Craft," all spotlighting Dr. Know's axework.
