Hellhammer - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Apocalyptic Raids was officially re-issued in expanded form on CD in 1990; this project was overseen by Ain.
Hellhammer has also, perhaps drawing inspiration from this band, been used as a pseudonym by Jan Axel Blomberg, the drummer of Mayhem.
At the time, it was regarded as one of the heaviest and most extreme records yet produced.

This is a brutal recreation/tribute to Hellhammer, covering their entire 'Apocalyptic Raids' EP/mini-album, plus the two bonus tracks (originally on the 'Death Metal' sampler album).
This is a Megiddo/Rampage split CD, in which the two bands take turns covering the songs from Hellhammer's "Apocalyptic Raids 1990 A.D." release (i.e.

"Apocalyptic Raids" is a collection of Hellhammer's early stuff; two of the songs appeared on the "Death Metal sampler", which I'm sure you own and keep right next to the Gideon's Bible on your nightstand.
The cover of "Apocalyptic Raids" (at least, the version I own) has a devilish-looking figure who is not the epitome of classic beauty.
I don't want to get all that technical, since the demo history of bands is something I find altogether boring.

Hellhammer - Satan Stole My Teddybear
Apocalyptic Raids 1990 A.D. is in fact a record so bad that it's actually good.
To be honest, no thinking, rational person would ever be led to believe that this four song EP (appended with a couple compilation tracks for the 1990 reissue on CD) would literally turn the music world on its head and create an enormous subgenre of music that has completely changed the face of heavy metal.

 RUmorbid055
As the German have always claimed their aim was to to release the albums that Hellhammer didn't by themselves, Apocalyptic Raids has a slightly different approach.
Anyway, apart from the few changes that occurred in the compositions between the demo and album versions of the same tracks, a big difference is found in the sound approach.
The demo certainly has a sound texture closer to the one of the "Morbid Tales" album, whereas the album has a sound much closer to Hellhammer's "Apocalyptic Raids".

Encyclopaedia Metallum - Reviews for Hellhammer - Satanic Rites
Anyway, two of the songs from the original "Apocalyptic Raids" EP are here, as well as the two tracks featured on the Metal Massacre compilation, the label release debut of Hellhammer.
IN particular, the version of "Triumph of Death" seems to be rather lackluster....probably partially do to the completely anguished vocals Tom pulls off on the "Apocalyptic Raids" version of this track.
I believe that "Satanic Rites" was the recording that got them a semi-deal with Noise records to record a four song EP.

 REVIEWS A
The album as a whole turned out rather speedy this time, yet always maintains the doomy and apocalyptic guitar sound that made HELLHAMMER so unique in their heydays.
While I still complained about the fact that they "recycle" a lot of the old riffs in my previous reviews, I don't mind that any longer as I noticed that this seems to be an important part of their musical concept.
Considering the fact that "The Third Storm..." feeling- and tempowise consists of a whole lot of different songs, it could easily be said that it's the band's most diverse release so far.

 Nuclear Blast America
Hellhammer only released one record, an EP called Apocalyptic Raids, but that solitary release was more than enough to plant the musical seed in a small group of aspiring musicians that would eventually germinate into Warhammer.
No, not the Norwegian black metal drummer, but rather the long-disbanded group from Switzerland that served as the template to one of the ‘80s most innovative and avantgarde bands: Celtic Frost.
The band’s sophomore effort, Deathchrist (released on Grind Syndicate Media), contained even heavier and more morbid songs.

 death strike - fuckin' death
The material on here is absolute classic stuff, and reminds me in spirit of albums like Hellhammer's "Apocalyptic Raids" and Slaughter's "Surrender Or Die"; totally primitive hardcore inspired metal.
This stuff is more death metal than the aforementioned albums, but is great nonetheless.

Apocalyptic Raids - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Hellhammer's first and only official record is a cult item in the metal underground even today.
Apocalyptic Raids was originally released in 1984 as a 12" EP, then re-issued in 1990 with a new cover.

 HELLHAMMER
The concept of Hellhammer was very limited, and within a few weeks of recording the "Apocalyptic Raids" EP Tom and Martin felt they had done all they could with the band and left.
They also appeared on a Noise compilation album, "Death Metal," with 2 tracks: "Messiah" and "Revelations of Doom." For a band with only 3 demos, one 12" EP and an appearance on a compilation album, they would unknowingly spawn hundreds of bands to follow in their footsteps.
Hellhammer had only one official release, the 12" EP entitled "Apocalyptic Raids," which was unleashed in early 1984.

 Metal Forces Interview
What's more the hardcore punters were seen to actually like the bands music, and the Swiss trio eventually signed to the German Noise label and released a mini-album entitled "Apocalyptic Raids" - but again the knives were out at MF.
By this time Tom Warrior had completely dismissed any relations with yours truly, refusing interviews and even went as far as saying that "HELLHAMMER would never play in England because of METAL FORCES." Well that statement was true because it wasn't long before HELLHAMMER disbanded and Tom Warrior had formed CELTIC FROST.
Yes, Tom made sure that HELLHAMMER were featured in virtually every global underground metal publication.

 HellHammer - Apocalyptic Raids 1990 A.D. sputnikmusic
The original «Apocalyptic Raids» ended here, but this new version comes with two bonus tracks.
The first is «Revelations of Doom», which despite the title is a song similar to all the others on this record except with a slightly different riff.
The musicians can barely play their instruments, but that’s OK — the goal is to be cacophonous anyway, so it ends up not mattering.

 CMT.com : Hellhammer : Biography
With Warrior on vocals and guitar, Steve Warrior (no relation) on bass, and Bruce Day on drums, the trio was only active, off and on, for close to a year between 1983 and 1984.
Despite their crude sound and dubious quality, the demos were eventually released by Noise Records with the title Apocalyptic Raids 1990 A.D. ~ Ed Rivadavia, All Music Guide
But their Apocalyptic Raids demo left a lasting impression nonetheless, doing the rounds in Europe's underground tape-trading networks long after the band had disintegrated and given birth to the much more ambitious Celtic Frost.

And the guitar tone sounds so torturing, so demonic, and that could be because of the poor equipment and equally incompetent technical skills, but, intentional or not, it gives the record such a strong sense of chaos and annihilation.
Tom G. Warrior growls on Celtic Frost's first album sound sane if we compare them with the ones on Apocaliptic Raids.
Before I had even heard Hellhammer, I had heard mixed reviews about them from friends, and musicians and books.

 BNR Metal Pages -- Hellhammer
Regarded as an influential band in both the death and black black metal fields, Hellhammer's life was intentionally cut short as founder Tom Warrior, realizing the limitations of the band, regrouped and formed the much-improved Celtic Frost.
At the time, Apocalyptic Raids drew sharply divided opinions, most finding the raw, simplistic style either brilliant or laughably worthless.

 The Welkin: Online Music Reviews
The Welkin: Reviews: H: Hellhammer - Apocalyptic Raids 1990 A. It's quite strange to think that Hellhammer's (no, not the drummer) rather mediocre album "Apocalyptic Raids" would, along with Venom, help spawn the black/death metal movement.
In retrospect the music is less-than average, even quite horrible at times, but it has to be seen in the historical perspective of the time and what importance it has had in later years.
Think of the re-released "Apocalyptic Raids 1990 A.D." as a relic to the past and an important part of your collection if you're interested in exploring the roots of darker metal.

These 12 apocalyptic funerals remind me a lot of a mix between TRAGEDY and SKITSYSTEM –
* G.B.H – “City baby's revenge, 101 ways to kill a rat” LP * GRIMPLE – “Up your ass” LP * HELLHAMMER “Apocalyptic raids 1990 a.d.” CD bis zum bitteren Ende” LP * SLIME – “Die Letzten” LP * SLIME – “Live Pankehallen 21.1.1984” LP Okay buddies, that's all for this time!!
This means, you should be prepared for some faster paced, hard as fuck and ultra heavy, gloomy hardcore that includes hoarse screaming vocals as well as tons of morbid hooks that will stick in your soul forever.

Very reminiscent of the first USURPER album in some spots, and definitely not as "contrived" as WARHAMMER, so this is a must-have if you like your evil Blackened darkness slow and heavy!
Somehow APOKALYPTIC RAIDS (formerly known as Apocalyptic Raids) splits the difference between Underground Blackened Doom pioneers HELLHAMMER and OBITUARY without sounding very much like CELTIC FROST!
Fans of WINTER, or Finland's INCRIMINATED take note!

 Marcus Karlssons Hellhammer Page
Apocalyptic Raids 1990 A.D. I must say that I was a bit disapointed at Hellhammer when i first heard them.
This is even today one of the most original Deathy Thrash bands that forces you to bang the head to the primitive riffs.
Everyone I've heard has always praised Hellhammer as the greatest of all time and the creator of the black metal scene (besides Venom of course).

 Hard History Part V
Hellhammer's Apocalyptic Raids, Death's Scream Bloody Gore, and Possessed's The Seven Churches marked the beginning of a gender of music destined to never attain commercial success.
Guitars became as heavy and downtuned as possible, tempo changes went from breakneck speeds to grindingly slow aggression, double pedaling almost became a rule for drummers, and vocalists switched from screaming to uttering guttural growls that were barely intelligible.
