Anton Bruckner - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Bruckner's reputation is based on his symphonies, masses, and motets.
Bruckner suggested using his Te Deum as a Finale, which would complete the homage to Beethoven's Ninth symphony (also in D minor), but he was intent on completing the Symphony.
During the time that Bruckner began work on this Symphony, he was aware that Wagner's death was imminent, and so the Adagio is slow mournful music for Wagner, and for the first time in Bruckner's oeuvre, the Wagner tuba is included in the orchestra.

Anton Bruckner: Symphony No. 6 (Tintner)

 Notes on four Bruckner Motets
Anton Bruckner is known to classical music buffs as a peasant savant symphonist, the "master-builder of cathedrals in sound" who was deeply influenced by Wagner's grand operas and who served in turn as an inspiration for Gustav Mahler.
Bruckner's sacred music isn't nearly as extensively recorded as his nine symphonies.
For Traumihler, Bruckner created an extraordinary motet in the Lydian mode, which achieves striking harmonic effects without ever using a single sharp or flat note.

And Bruckner composed for a cathedral acoustic that's absent from today's concert halls and recording studios; where he left pauses to allow his huge reverberations to die away, we hear nothing (though the answer here might be to fix the acoustic rather than charge through the pauses).
No question that Bruckner belongs to Austria (not Germany) and had an affinity with Schubert, or that his religious mode should be celebratory (just listen to the opening outburst of the Credo from the F-minor Mass).
The Nazis were as clueless about Bruckner's music as they were about Mahler's.

Bruckner reported that Bülow was delighted by the symphony's "beautiful ideas" but horrified by the boldness with which Bruckner developed them.

It is probable that the impression produced by this 9th symphony is the deeper as owing little or nothing to the musical politics which had gone far to prevent the 7th symphony from standing on its own unmistakable merits.
This 9th symphony is designed, with characteristic tactlessness and simplicity, to follow Beethoven's 9th symphony in every possible point which could challenge comparison; in key (D minor), opening (mysterious tremolo leading to tremendous unison tutti), contrasts (return in first movement) and choral finale.
Bruckner wished this to be appended to the three complete movements of his 9th symphony, which his last illness (ending in his death at Vienna on the 11th of October 1896) prevented him from finishing.
