Not only do Antics provide the depth that their debut explored musically, but it is a extraordinary natural progression.
As so it goes for this 4-man band on the eve of their sophomore release.

BBC - Rock & Alt Review - Interpol, Antics
Antics stands to be a favorite album of mine, but behind Turn On The Bright Lights, which for me, is a more defined album.
Antics is precisely how it should be and is my Album of the Year.
Antics reveals a warmer more energised band who are not afraid to venture out into the sunshine for a bit.

 Interpol: Antics (2004): Reviews
Antics is a very strong record that is home to a number of truly incredible songs.
Altogether the album's feel is much more lively, bouncy, and accessible, and in combination with the band's ubiquitous ambient underpinnings, the upbeat tone often makes this collection inspiring.
You will love some or all of these ten tracks, but for reasons you don't quite understand, you may never love the album as a whole.

CD Baby: ANTICS: We're Just Bad Boys
Antics is a keyboard-oriented, guitar driven, high energy blues-rock band.
Formed in 1980, Antics has evolved from a simple, rock cover band to a hard drivin' blues-rock band with their own distinctive keyboard oriented, guitar driven sound.
By combining their love of the blues, with awesome rock guitar riffs and great vocal harmonies, Antics delivers a very polished, yet gritty product and proves the blues isn't just for acoustic guitars.

 PLAYLOUDER review - Antics
‘Antics’ is a record inspired by, written and bloodily-birthed on the hot tarmac that flows smoothly beneath a rock band’s tour bus.
Whereas ‘Turn On The Bright Lights’ was bloated with the ambling musical luxuries of an unsigned band in their basement, ‘Antics’ has a lean and urgent physique that can only be produced by merciless schedules and the detached grind of touring.
Flying through the first few songs of ‘Antics’, swooping under the huge, gleaming choruses, you’re struck by the muscularity of Interpol’s music.

Interpol Antics Album Review - SoundsXP
Whilst there is more melody on this album and slightly more colour it would be still be folly to claim that it’s accessible and mainstream friendly, ‘Antics’ is a record which takes listens to unravel itself and make all of its wonderful nuances known to you.
No, ‘Antics’ is a progression: the sound of a band exploring their collective ability, pushing their perceived boundaries and growing out of their influences and becoming one themselves.
What it does see is a band who are not just the only act to emerge from the glut of ‘The’ bands with any credibility and imagination, but it also sees a band establishing themselves as America’s best and most important band.

The Crutch Music Review: Interpol - Antics
While the songs on Antics are all of a piece with the grand, piercing sweep of Bright Lights, the biggest change on it are Banks’s vocals: they’re more crisply enunciated, sung with more melodic inflection, and both of these are positive changes.
But in contrast to the dim murk of Bright Lights, Antics is much more brightly produced and translucent, and so the lyrics, often obscured on the last record, and more immediately discernible on this one.
But I didn’t expect great literature from Antics, and if you were a fan of Interpol’s last album, neither did you.

 Interpol: Antics: Pitchfork Review
Antics exudes a preceding aura of heaviness-- even the packaging is heavy; the album's cryptic liner notes consist of little more than stark grayscale photos and epigrammatic Morse code spelling out bits of song titles ("Length", "Narc", "Cruise", "Exit", respectively).
However, their liberation of form emphasizes the fact that, in the grand scheme of Interpol's career, this is only one in a series of great, if not Great, albums.
Similarly, Antics casts off the weight of advance hype, stewing anticipation, and unreasonable expectations, and wisely distinguises itself as a strong collection of singles rather than as an immaculately cohesive album.

While the lyrics are kind of iffy, the music and "vibe" of "Antics" is a sign that Interpol might be on a lot of "Best of 2004" lists by the end of the year.
Whether you love or hate Interpol's second album "Antics" depends on how you felt about "Turn On The Bright Lights." If you liked their debut, chances are you'll like this one too.
But with the pressure of a new album, they seem to have let rip with their expressive, complex melodies.

 Matador Records Interpol Biography
So it remains on 'Antics.' But what has changed, markedly, is the breadth of sounds, emotion, and characters at play in their music.
They had already debuted a handful of songs earmarked for 'Antics' on the road: "Length of Love," "Narc," "C'mere." Meanwhile, having revisited – and reinvented – the material from 'Bright Lights' night after night, they discovered new strengths.
After two years of seemingly endless tours, the quartet returned in early 2004 to Peter Katis’s Tarquin Studios in Bridgeport, Conn., to record their second album.

Rock Knows No Fear - Antics
Interpol are clearly an example of that breed of band who make just enough waves with their first album to get a significant push behind the second (much like the Lost Prophets earlier this year).
There are some who love it and others who don’t understand the enthusiasm; still more have expressed the sentiment that Interpol’s live performances hint at a kind of musical energy that they leave at the door when they enter the studio.
Arguably the finest moment on the album it still pales in comparison to the excellent “Obstacle 1” and “PDA” from Turn on… The better moments of Antics only remind you how good the first album was, the poorer moments are best forgotten.

Interpol - Antics - Stylus Magazine
Antics, you see, is a perfectly good record.
Antics is ten songs in just over forty minutes with no real clunkers.
The things that made Turn On The Bright Lights so good were a) the fact that the song structures seem to come from nowhere at first and b) there was an assiduous handling of mood throughout the album.

village voice > music > Interpol's Antics by Mikael Wood
Antics is pretty slow for a Nü York indie-rock record, but it doesn't drag.
Though Fogarino displays an admirable enthusiasm for propulsive disco beats on the disc's rockers, and bassist Carlos D steals "Evil" 's show with a bouncy line he stole from Krist Novoselic, Kessler might be Antics' secret star.
Or listen to how the dilapidated sock-hop doo-wop line Kessler unreels in "Public Pervert" enacts Banks's desire to "resuscitate the fading sounds of your life."

Though Turn on the Bright Lights was the best album of 2002, I’ll not hesitate to say that, barring some otherworldly competition, Antics looks to be the best album of 2004.
So, Interpol either sound like every great band from 1978-2002, or that they just have one thing in common with all these bands, and which all these bands have in common with each other: greatness.
It’s not so hard to believe that arguably the best band of the '00s so far could produce two year end list-topping albums.

Interpol - Antics (Matador) - Drawer B Review
The release of Antics proves one thing right off the bat: Interpol managed to pull itself away from the tour bus and black-bobbed sluts long enough to record some new songs.
And Antics showcases Banks’ penchant for creating memorable melodies out of the most awkward and stilted phrases ever put to music.
The songwriting is still too heavy on tangential offshoots that stray too far from the meat of the songs, but the hooks and verses are strong enough to keep it all together.

From the processional church organ to the sighing guitar, from the echo on the spare piano notes to the sound of the drums, from the stained-glass window to the wailing wall, "Next Exit" is a poor facsimile of Gentlemen-era Afghan Whigs (there we go again).
Believe it or not, Antics opens with a song that resembles a defunct band more closely -- in structure, sound, and sentiment -- than anything on the debut.
Having fielded comparison after comparison since the release of Turn on the Bright Lights, you'd think the band would've also thought to be more cautious the second time around.

 The Austin Chronicle: Music: Phases
Antics is doomed to wilt in the shadow of its predecessor, but in reality the two are separated mostly by savvy sequencing and the element of surprise – debut vs. the inevitable sophomore downturn.
That's good if you're Banks, who sounds like he stopped at two lattes this time out, and guitarist Daniel Kessler, whose spiraling flights into the ether are smoother and better shaped; not so good if you're Carlos D and underused drummer Sam Fogarino, who tend to drag in spots.
Turn on the bright lights when the party is at its peak, and save Antics for the morning after.

Their first self-titled studio release was a quieter work where Emerson displayed his brilliance on the piano in the wonderful "Take a Pebble." With Lake's rich tenor wrapped around an extended piano improvisation, "Take a Pebble" was to become an ELP concert standard.
Emerson's sheer mastery of the moog and flamboyant technical ability were incredible; his talent along with the dynamo drumming antics of Carl Palmer, won the band a legion of fans.
ELP debuted at the 1970 Isle of Wight Festival where they ripped into their now famous rendition of Mussorgsky's "Pictures at an Exhibition," an orgasmic moog workout pushing the bounds of anything previously heard by a rock keyboardist.

Abstract: Legassie: “The Mosque-Crashing Antics of Pero Tafur, Fifteenth-Century Knight”
With the aid of a renegade Muslim born in Portugal he sneaked into the Mosque of Omar, a location prohibited to Christians on pain of death.
This essay explores the complexities of Pero Tafur’s narration of his mosque-crashing antics, particularly the manner in which it reconstitutes his attempt to conceal his identity as a Christian as a prestige-grabbing assertion of his identity as a knight.
Anticipating the cross-dressing antics of Richard Burton by some four centuries, Pero Tafur’s transgressive appropriation of Muslim sacred space is as puzzling as it is provocative.

Juliet Fleming: "Response to Margreta de Grazia's 'Hamlet's Thoughts and Antics'"
"Hamlet's Thoughts and Antics" thus suggests, pace Coleridge and others, that in their moment Shakespeare's plays were concerned less with character than with plot -- which is to say that one could imagine the play without the Prince, but not the Prince without the play.
For if the character of Hamlet as the man who thinks is the precipitate of a plot that will have him delay, the plot of delay is ITSELF the instrument and consequence of a dramaturgical interest in the deployment and infraction of genre.
"Hamlet's Thoughts and Antics" engages the critical heritage of Shakespeare's most famous play at each of these levels.
