Amused to Death - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Amused to Death is a solo album by former Pink Floyd member Roger Waters, released in 1992 (see 1992 in music).
Featuring Jeff Beck on guitar, Amused to Death further explores Waters' disillusionment with modern western society, focusing specifically on the influence of TV and the mass media, and was inspired by the book Amusing Ourselves to Death, a critique of television and its related culture, by Neil Postman.
In typical Waters fashion, Amused to Death is a concept album--this one organized loosely around the idea of a monkey randomly switching channels on a television--but explores numerous political and social themes, including a critique of the first Gulf War in which Waters has a choir sing the "global anthem" : "Can't you see?

allmusic ((( Amused to Death > Overview )))
Amused to Death is a solid album both conceptually and musically, showcasing Waters as an artist who, like his work with Pink Floyd, conveys his thoughts and ideals with pinpoint accuracy so that they are engraved within his audience's mind.
With this album, Waters touches heavily on the dangers of capitalism, the insensitivity of the human race, the ridiculousness of war, and the onslaught of mindless entertainment that encroaches on mankind on a day-to-day basis.
Ending with the title track, a song that sums up the whole of the album with it's subtle yet hard-hitting demeanor, Waters proves that he can still reveal his conceptual ideas with pristine clarity, only on Amused to Death, the music is as equally entertaining and effective.

With a tentative release date of 1989, the album was to be named "Amused to Death," and even had an album cover design already in the works.
There was speculation that Roger Waters would created a sequel to his 1987 album "Radio K.A.O.S." During breaks in his "K.A.O.S." tour, he recorded some material at Nassau's Compass Point Studios and The Billiard Room, the recording studio in his Barnes, West London, house.
A few years later, 1992, the album would finally be released.

Amused To Death, Waters' third solo outing since leaving the popular group, is, in some ways, his most satisfying work outside the band.
When Waters' narrative worked, as on 1979's The Wall, one was willing to overlook the often overly s-l-o-w tempos and assorted lyrical gaffes (must the Japanese always be referred to as Nips or Japs in his songs?).
And Waters is still covering the same ground he trod when he recorded The Final Cut with Pink Floyd in 1983.

Actually, the closing quartet of "Watching TV" through "Amused to Death" are probably the strongest music Waters ever did on any solo effort, getting a bit denser instrumentally and a bit more focused lyrically, and a lot more tasty melodically.
I find Amused to Death to be the album that The Final Cut should have been - it's in the same vocal-heavy, sparse-instrumental style, only done a whole lot better.
I usually find it difficult to sit through the entire album, it being so long and so windy, but for me those last four tracks are worth the price of admission; the closing title track never fails to give me chills.
