The Fourth Annual Native American Music Awards
Previous field work recordings from scholars, anthropologists, ethnomusicologists and others of traditional Native American music made in the past 100 years are not in the hands of its performers or descendants, and exist in various archival libraries throughout the country.
Today, Native American music has now come to embrace not only the ancient sounds of Native America, but also the modern as contemporary Native American musicians begin to meld their ancient music traditions with more popular "American" music genres such as: rock.
What can be viewed as a "musical society" or "musical culture," Native Americans have marked every occasion and event in their lives with a song; from ceremonials, sports and dance to courting, birth and death.

 Recordings of American Composers: 2
The recorded sound is rather poor and the performance of the Beach symphony is quite inferior to the newer recording by the Detroit Symphony (Chandos).
American musical tastes have so concentrated on Ives, and the music after 1930 that Carpenter, one of the greats of 1920's, has been disgracefully neglected.
The recording engineers are to be commended for overcoming the notoriously dreadful acoustics of the San Francisco orchestra's performing hall, Louise Davies Center.

Although the recording is technically artificial in nature, I did record it with my trusty Kenwood MD recorder (which I use for other field recordings); and it blurs the line between the natural and the artificial, as the sound you here was generated by random processes similar to those of nature...
Recorded on a Sharp MD831 with an Audio Technica AT822 stereo microphone.
I was trying to record the sounds of birds, but through the microphone I heard an old lady striking a bell and chanting in front of an offertory box.

 ToxicUniverse.com - Johnny Cash - 1994 - American Recordings Music Review
American Recordings is a return to top form of one of America’s greatest songwriters.
One of the Cash discs at the library was American Recordings, the album that revived his career and made him popular with the ‘alternative’ set.
The second reference is to the fact that it was his debut on Rick Rubin’s American Recordings label.

With the troubles in the recorded classical music industry, though, it is younger composers who may have an increasingly hard time getting their works recorded, particularly large-scale orchestral pieces.
In fact, the Naxos "American Classics" series is the biggest event in the recording of American music since the founding of New World Records in 1975.

Variety Stage: Sound Recordings Home Page
The initial release of the American Variety Stage collection includes ten sound recordings selected from vintage Edison phonograph Diamond Discs released from 1913-1927.
This offering of sound recordings will be expanded in the future to include a broad sampling of dramatic, comic, and musical acts from the variety stage.
These recordings feature comic skits, popular music and songs--including well-known favorites from the Civil War and World War I--and a dramatic monologue.

After listening to the recording, have the students write a reaction to the recording on question 1 of the worksheet Native American Music: Traditional and Modern.
Play the recording of the first Native American music and have the students select which rhythm pattern (of the three that they clapped to earlier) is being used in this recording.
Through the lesson, students will discuss the geographical factors leading to the creation of the instruments, listen to recordings of Native American music (both traditional and modern), discuss similarities and/or differences between traditional and modern Native American music, create their own instrument, and play their instrument along with the recording.

First produced for the U. Bi-Centennial, these recordings are now on CD and feature material not included with the original issue on LP, the most telling of which is a stop-by-stop tour of the Immaculate Conception organ, complementing a similar tour of the Holy Cross organ.

An encyclopedic discography of acoustic orchestral recordings, this volume chronicles a long-neglected field.

 Recordings of American Composers: 3
But this recording takes us back to a time closer to the birth of the music.
This recording is recommended not so much for its relation to American music, but because it offers a glimpse of another fine composer who might have done more for American Music.
One wonders why so many Americans of the time had to provide their music with German titles, such as Zweite (2nd) Suite; nonetheless the last movement (Toccata) is a wonderful rambling piece.

TAXI A&R Interview: George Drakoulias, American Recordings
You make records that you want to hear, and the records I want to hear are the records that I loved.
I loved black records and R&B records and soul records from the radio, oldies stuff.
You discuss records you like, records they like, then you talk about the songs.

They were indebted to George Gershwin, their predecessor, who was the first to straddle the two worlds of popular and classical music in a way that made Europeans sit up and listen to American composers.
He has recorded the orchestra music of Steven Mackey on the RCA-BMG label as a member of the New World Symphony under Michael Tilson Thorn Thomas.
The second group of composers represented in this recording comes out of contemporary America, where most mainstream audiences dread new music for fear that it will be overly cerebral and atonal.

Mark Hughes: Audio: Johnny Cash's Billboard ad
Cash's American Recordings album, Unchained, was named the Country Album of the Year by the voting membership of the National Academy of Recording Arts and Sciences (NARAS).
It is strange that with radio not playing the music, someone is buying the music.
Cash is no stranger to controversy and this latest antic was pretty much taken in stride (and with more than a few chuckles) by most of the folks on Nashville's famed Music Row.

"American Recordings" -- Reviewed by Dr. Mellow
In all, "American Recordings" is probably the best album I have ever heard.
The last cut on the album, "The Man Who Couldn't Cry," is a somewhat comical song which touches on almost every cliche found in country music.

Rick Sowash Recordings: Eroica, American Record Guide Review
I spend so much time on Sowash's trio because I think there could really be an audience for this splendid "new" music if only people have a chance to hear it -- especially as presented here, in fine performances and vivid recorded sound.
If my description appeals to you, do yourself a favor and seek out this disc; you won't regret it.
How Sowash manages to get such a rich, almost orchestral fullness and variety from his three instruments at these climactic points is a marvel to hear.

Songs by writers as diverse as Leonard Cohen, Glenn Danzig, Nick Lowe and Tom Waits make this Cash's boldest collection, but it's Cash's own work ("Delia's Gone," "Redemption") and the tense yin and yang of his restless heart and Christian soul that provoke country as cathartic as country gets.
