Alto (voice) - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
In music, an alto or contralto is a singer with a vocal range somewhere between a tenor and a mezzo-soprano.
Altos originally sang from music written in the alto clef, but now use the treble clef.
However, choirs singing early music frequently include adult male altos, also called countertenors.

 Counter-tenors in Bach's Vocal Works - Part 2
A well-trained voice, as I understand it, wishes to create the illusion that there is no break from one to the other as one sings an ascending scale.
Despite the fact that Bach has preponderance of good alto arias in his vocal output, I could hardly stand the sound made by local talents or the few recorded altos that I had been able to listen to.
I take it that by "politically-correct" you mean they don't share your inexplicable association between the male alto voice and a sexual orientation, an assocation that's made even more inexplicable because you apparently only have it with clasically trained singing voices, not with pop music singers.

 Altos in Bach's Vocal Works
Put male altos on the line and the choir suddenly sounds as bright as the SSAT choir.
When sung by modern choirs with women as altos, the third choir sounds hopelessly mudddy because the women are singing in their lowest register.
I think this particular recording (Rilling BWV 83/1 with Watts) is wonderful, an example of an excellent alto at the opposite end of the style spectrum from the boy altos (also potentially excellent) so much under discussion.

 Voice Definitions and Ranges
A good deal of confusion comes from the fact that we, today, use these labels to denote voice types, whereas the same labels were used for voice parts at the time.
They all meant the same thing, that is, a line of polyphony between cantus (canto, soprano) and tenor (teneur or taille in French), usually written in a clef a 3d apart from the tenor.
When another voice was added to the monophony in the 13th c., the part which "held" (Latin tenere) the cantus (chant) line was called tenot, while the voice added above it was called superius (Latin super=above).
