Alan Wilder - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
After the release of Recoil's 2000 album Liquid, Wilder announced his semi-retirement from recording.
For many years, Wilder was seen as the musician in Depeche Mode.
It is rumoured his departure in 1995 was due partly to being taken for granted in the band and not having any say musically, apart from forming Gore's embryonic songs into Depeche Mode masterpieces.

 Alan's Biography
Alan also contributed some of his own songs for the album as well as extra B-sides, although he would later admit that he felt obliged to participate in the songwriting process despite the fact that it didn’t come naturally to him.
Between 1992-93, Wilder reassumed his Depeche duties as the band recorded the album, ‘Songs of Faith And Devotion’.
Surrounded by a passion for all things musical (something commonplace in the Wilder family), it was inevitable that he be encouraged to follow in their footsteps and take up the piano.

Alan Wilder left Depeche Mode at the height of their success to pursue his own musical outlet as Recoil, frustrated by the corporate machine and his own level of contribution to that band.
Wilder finally goes it alone with "Shunt", a track that manages to begin by synchronizing itself to your heartbeat, and then gradually increasing the tempo and tension in such a way as to leave you literally out of breath by the end.
Wilder needed a musical vehicle for his own ideas, rather than to remain a vessel for primary Depeche Mode songwriter Martin Gore.

 Dreaming of Wilder
Wilder's debut performance with Depeche Mode was at Croc's in early January of 1982, followed by the BBC In Concert show, and an American tour beginning later that month.
Alan was not given any credit on the band's second album, A Broken Frame, but he did participate in all tours, interviews, and photo sessions from that point on.
Since then, Wilder has not composed any music for Depeche Mode but has begun his own band Recoil, where he does all the engineering, composing, and producing himself.

Choler Magazine Interview: Alan Wilder (Recoil)
Unless you're Alan Wilder and you're more concerned with the quality of your creative output than the quantity of albums or concert tickets you sell.
As an orchestrator and catalyst, Wilder has brought Recoil to its apex with Liquid, creating an album that, while dark and brooding, is miles more ambitious than anything his former band ever attempted.
That same need to be master of his own musical destiny compelled him to devote himself full time to Recoil, a project he'd long used as a way to explore avenues not open to him by Depeche Mode's rigid commitment to making alternative pop music.

OK, so the lyrics are pushing it a bit, and the whale noises aren't that welcome, but the music itself is wonderfully smooth and flowing, and Cambell's vocals are perfect for it.
