Ahmad Jamal enlivens normally reserved jazz crowd
Ahmad Jamal’s music, however, is delicate and restrained; in a space as large as Mandel Hall, Jamal’s subtle melodic whispers risk being engulfed by the cavernous expanse.
Jamal’s risk-taking was one of the more surprising elements of the concert.
Yet for most of the evening, Jamal was able to overcome the difficulties of the setting and powerfully connect the audience to his music, crafting a performance that managed to be both sensitive and celebratory.

NPR : Marian McPartland's Piano Jazz: Ahmad Jamal
Jamal's 1958 release, Ahmad Jamal at The Pershing, created a sensation; recordings from that session stayed in the ten best-selling charts for over 100 weeks.
The LP produced such classics as "But Not For Me" and what became the Jamal's signature tune, "Poinciana." The album caught the ear of trumpeter Miles Davis, who admired the pianist's "lean style, use of space, and simple embellishments." These elements were to prove integral for Davis' sound in the late 1950s and '60s.
Two tracks from the album, both written by Jamal, are on-demand below.

American Visions: Ahmad Jamal: a lasting impression - jazz pianist and composer - includes list of sound recordings
The excitement Jamal generated at clubs came through clearly on his 1958 recording Ahmad Jamal at the Pershing, which contained his version of a little-known Broadway standard, "Poinciana." This instrumental jazz LP rose to the top of the Billboard charts for an astounding 108 weeks.
Buoyed by the success of that album, Jamal recorded and toured in the late 1950s and early '60s, and opened a nonalcoholic nightclub in Chicago called the Alhambra, which closed in 1962.
Jamal's first trio--with guitarist Ray Crawford (from the Four Strings) and bassist Eddie Calhoun--brought Jamal's "chamber jazz" sound into being.

Ahmad Jamal: After Fajr - PopMatters Music Review
Jamal uses the standard jazz style (bass walking, drums swinging, piano chording with the left hand and playing melody with the right), but he supplements this with bass ostinatos, doublings of lines between piano and bass, melody parts for the drums, long suspensions, interludes and tags, vamp sections, and extreme contrasts between registers.
If you are a Jamal fan, then this is a good record that -- with the exception of the vocal track -- will repay many listenings.
Jamal sounds young and hip to contemporary sounds without any cheesy electronics or pop music appropriations.

National Initiatives: NEA Jazz Masters on Tour - Ahmad Jamal
His 1958 album At the Pershing became a surprising smash hit, highlighted by his interpretation of "Poinciana." With the popularity of the album and the advocacy of Davis, Jamal's trio was one of the most popular jazz acts in the late 1950s and early 1960s.
Several tunes that were in Jamal's playlist, such as the standard "Autumn Leaves" and Jamal's own "New Rhumba," began appearing in the playlist of Davis' 1950s bands.
For the most part, Jamal has worked in piano-bass-drums trios, using the intricate relationship of the band to explore his sound, directing the trio through seemingly abrupt time and tempo shifts.

Jamal's 1958 album, "Ahmad Jamal at the Pershing: But Not for Me," like Dave Brubeck's "Take Five" and Davis' "Sketches of Spain," caught the ear of the public, finding its way into the record collections of folks who otherwise did not listen to jazz.
It's a relief that Jamal's current work is finally getting some attention, since in the public imagination he has been somewhat frozen in time by the success of one great album and his storied influenced on Miles Davis.
Back in the '50s, Jamal's important innovation was to treat the piano trio like a little chamber orchestra, with bass, drums and cymbals contributing as much as the piano itself.
