 A History of African Music
To put African music in an historical and social context, I compiled the following notes on African history, on the social context of African music, on the instruments and styles of African music, and on the popularisation of African music.
Originally jazz was dance music, a fusion of ragtime piano style with blues, spirituals and the brass music of marching bands common at the start of the twentieth century.
Because music is a total expression of life, shared by all the senses, different cultures and lifestyles have significant influences on the music.

 African American music -- Facts, Info, and Encyclopedia article
African American music was often sanitized for white audiences, who would not have as readily accepted black performers, leading to genres like (A style of jazz played by big bands popular in the 1930s; flowing rhythms but less complex than later styles of jazz) swing music, a pop-based outgrowth of jazz.
By the (The decade from 1940 to 1949) 1940s, (A recording of a song that was first recorded or made popular by somebody else) cover versions of African American songs were commonplace, and frequently topped the charts, while the original musicians found little success.
In 1927, a concert survey of black music was performed at Carnegie Hall including jazz, spirituals and the symphonic music of (Click link for more info and facts about W.C. Handy) W.C. Handy's Orchestra and Jubilee singers.

The process of traditional musicians (jelis) embracing, Africanizing, and integrating the guitar into their music culture, and then using it to move their music into the international arena of popular dance music is the focus of this article.
The rise of modern Mande music and of the electric guitar began with the independence of Guinea in 1958 when the new government launched a sweeping modernization policy in which European musical instruments (including electric guitars) were handed out, musicians were made civil servants, and a network of regional and national orchestras was established.
The acoustic guitar was first picked up in the 1920s or 1930s by jelis who began an Africanization process by adapting their balafon (xylophone), nkoni (lute), and kora (harp) repertories and playing styles to it.

African American Music: From the beginnings to contemporary Black musical history.
They remembered the importance of music in the West African way of life—how almost every activity was accompanied by music appropriate to the occasion and how special kinds of music were provided for festivals (called "customs" in Africa)— and they continued these practices in the New World.
Perhaps worthy of special mention are the Pinkster festivals held in various cities of New York state, in whch African-Americans danced traditional dances to the music of drums and singing, while large crowds of white spectators watched the "exotic" scenes.

One of the forthcoming releases from the folks at Rough Guide is their guide to the music of Sudan, and among the tracks is a selection by the great singer Mohammed Wardi, who recorded more than 300 songs in the 60s and 70s--to the best of my knowledge, none of them are available.
The members toyed with other musical projects in the years immediately following the breakup, but only Meneses is still active in music, playing free improv and experimental rock and jazz in Amsterdam.
It makes sense that the album was recorded in Ethiopia, as there are plenty of similarities the music shares with the sounds of this nearby country, but Wardi's gorgeous, high-pitched voice sounds more Arabic.

He simply wanted to perform the music he loved, and what he loved were the Zulu rhythms he heard as a child in South Africa.
In the late 1960s, Clegg became Mzila's musical apprentice, and the older man taught the eager teenager about Zulu music and traditional Inhlangwini dancing, characterized by aggressive high kicks.
In 1979, Clegg and Mchunu recorded their first album, "Universal Men," blending African and Western music.

Thus, the savanna belt of West Africa forms a music area distinct from the Guinea Coast because of its virtuosic instrumental styles and the presence of a class of professional praise singers, or griots, in that area.
African music and dance, therefore, are cultivated largely by societies in sub-Saharan Africa.

The most famous band in Africa, The Super Etoile, guided by Youssou N'Dour has crafted and invented a thoroughly modern African pop style, one which has gone on to influence artists as diverse as Peter Gabriel and Paul Simon.
