 A Passion Play - Education - Information - Educational Resources - Encyclopedia - Music
A Passion Play is a "concept album" released by Jethro Tull.
Apparently concerning the spiritual journey of one man in the afterlife, it is similar to Thick as a Brick in that it is one long track split across both sides of the LP vinyl record, save for the interruption of the oddly-whimsical spoken word piece "The Story Of The Hare Who Lost His Spectacles".
On its release in 1973, it received generally negative reviews; nevertheless, it sold well enough to reach #1 on the charts in the U.S. Today, Jethro Tull fans are still divided over the merits of the album.

 CATHOLIC ENCYCLOPEDIA: Passion Plays
Productions of the play, which came from Bavaria to the Tyrol in the second half of the eighteenth century, were arranged at irregular intervals during the first half of the nineteenth century; since 1855 they have taken place at regular intervals, at Brixlegg every ten years.
The wide diffusion of these liturgical plays, in which priests took the different parts, is proof of their popularity.
The clergy still retained the right to direct these productions, even after the plays reflected the spirit and opinions of the times.

A Passion Play - The Official Jethro Tull Website
The strangest segment of "Play" is undoubtedly "The Story of the Hare Who Lost His Spectacles," a spoken word piece with musical underpinnings.
Enough tracks to fill three sides of a double album were developed when technical problems in the studio, and band members' longing for home, caused all but four tracks to be scrapped (some of this material, like "Skating Away On The Thin Ice Of A New Day," would appear on "War Child").
It is often noted the piece has lyrical connections to "Winnie the Pooh" or "Alice in Wonderland" yet the best, and appropriate musical, comparison would be to Prokofiev's "Peter and the Wolf." Like this classic piece, the band backs a story teller with music representing the tale's characters and events.

 The Annotated Passion Play
Those three cuts ARE precisely the music which was replaced on the final "Passion Play" album by the "Hare and His Spectacles".
So basically the "Chateau D'Isaster Tapes" represent 50 minutes of music that was pared down to about 20 minutes on Side One of "Passion Play" to make room for the hare, and for the length restrictions inherent in vinyl records.
It sounded incredible to hear Tull play the music in exactly the same order as I had edited it on my own cassette and minidisc years ago.

 Passion Play
Although not scheduled to be released to theaters until Ash Wednesday, "The Passion" generated this spring more discussion than any film in recent memory: endless op-eds, press releases, debates, and denunciations--all about a movie, in Aramaic and Latin, that none of the commentators had seen.
Perhaps in response to all this publicity, both negative and positive, Gibson released a trailer for "The Passion" on July 14.

Passion Plays in History and Theology
Historically, Holy Week (the week leading up to Easter Sunday) was a period when Jews were most vulnerable and when Christians perpetrated some of the worst violence against their Jewish neighbors.
All these accounts culminate in the death and resurrection of Jesus as revealing God's saving power available to humanity.
There are four different accounts of the passion in the gospels of Christian Scriptures, in which Jews play different roles.

 On Passion Plays
Passion Plays are, in general, sources of theological anti-Judaism and do not help to improve the relationship of Christians and Jews.
It is not by chance that Adolf Hitler, who saw the 1934 presentation, praised it as a "precious tool" in the fight against Jews and Judaism.
It was first performed as a way to thank God for saving the city from a plague that was devastating Europe in the Middle Ages.
