90125 is absolutely astounding to my ear, and its musical complexity and accurate sonic quality make it my favorite album to dissect.
It is a flawless performance by a band recreating itself for a new generation of listeners, a re-invention that stunned their long-time fans, a reference recording for the entire music industry.
Instead of the nearly symphonic musical passages the band had become famous for, the songs of 90125 were relatively compact and edgy with a rock sound that was ahead of it's time in places.

The “90125” album, released in November 1983, was hailed as up-to-the-minute music, proving that this lineup could indeed invent fresh and commercially popular arrangements without sacrificing their reputation as tight, technical musicians in a progressive mode.
One of the strangest tracks on “90125” is “City of Love.” It doesn’t sound remotely like anything they’ve done before, and except for Jon’s screaming vocals, doesn’t even sound like anything else on this album.

1983's 90125 album was emblematic of this shift from prog rock pomposity to streamlined rock.
The days of Fragile and Close to the Edge were a distant memory on the album but it still remained a solid rock album with touches of the old Yes with Anderson's high voice and prescient virtuoso instrumentation.
Producer Trevor Horn (who ironically replaced Anderson as vocalist on Drama) brought a sleek, meticulously crafted sound to the band (he would later perfect that for Frankie Goes to Hollywood and Seal).

On one side, 90125 is one of the most approachable Yes albums in their entire discography...
90125 has its moments, but in the end, does show that Yes wasn't totally comfortable with this change in their musical philosophy.
And I refuse -- let me emphasize that, refuse -- to apologize for liking a song such as "Leave It." Always picturing the video in my mind whenever this song comes on, "Leave It" demonstrated that Yes was now a band with, minimally, three strong vocalists -- bassist Chris Squire, Anderson and Rabin.

Review: "Yes: 90125 (remaster)" - Sea of Tranquility - The Web Destination for Progressive Music!
90125 is not only an exceptional Yes album, but it is a great 80's rock album, period.
In my opinion, 90125 is an album that had to happen to take Yes to a new level and breath live into a band that had basically fallen apart.
Trevor Rabin brought a wealth of musical ability as well as a talent for writing and arranging crafty pop songs, which, when mixed with the prog sensibilities of Chris Squire, Jon Anderson, Allan White, and Tony Kaye, made Yes a household name again and helped them see successes that the band had never reached before.

Yes in the Press: YES: 90125 - Rolling Stone Magazine
Although 90125 occasionally falls back on old tricks, as in "Cinema" and the overblown "Our Song," most of the album is surprisingly spritely and poppish.
Given the personnel, 90125 counts as a reunion album of sorts, but considering the sound, reinvention might be a more apt term.
Applying the same kind of flashy pop sensibility he showed on ABC's Lexicon of Love, Horn has rechanneled Yes' predilection for sonic excess, and the result is a sound that relies on production and arranging tricks instead of instrumental flash.

Ground and Sky review - Yes - 90125
Anyway, fifteen years later, 90125 is now generally dismissed as a dated relic or a horrific AOR soul-sale on the part of a once-great band.
For the heavy prog fan, this may not have enough for you, but if you are willing to listen, you will hear some great music.
In short, I think 90125 often gives a spark of imaginative integration of pop with prog, and is a worthy companion to other proggified pop albums in the same vein from that particular time, like The Police's Synchronicity or Rush's Grace Under Pressure.
