The album was recorded at Massey Hall in Toronto on June 11th, 12th and 13th during their 2112 tour.
The track "Limelight" from their later album Moving Pictures includes the line "All the world's indeed a stage and we are merely players", perhaps a self-reference to this album.

The lyrics throughout the album are incredibly thoughtful and in-depth, and the song 2112 is inspired by novelist/philosopher Ayn Rand.
The center of this album is of course the epic title track that also serves as album opener: the twenty-one-twelve (2112).
This was the first concept album I ever bought and I found the concept of a concept album very unusual and it took a while to appreciate and accept the concept of this being a concept album.

2112 is archetypal high-concept heavy/art-rock, featuring an interconnected suite of songs and a futuristic science fiction-inspired lyrical theme (courtesy of drummer/sole lyricist Neil Peart).

This is the album where Pert's contributions really started to gel with the other members of the band, and it represents the apex of Rush's ambitious songwriting period (starting with Fly By Night, continuing on Caress of Steel, and this album), as after this album they would never approach the 20-minute mark with a song.

Ground and Sky review - Rush - 2112
This album is commonly cited as Rush's breakout album.
Listening to ELP's Tarkus the other day, it struck me how many similarities exist between that album and this one: each has a side-long track, composed of a ludicrous sci-fi narrative with instrumental virtuosity by a trio of solid musicians, along with another side of unrelated, and apparently neglected, songs of varying quality.
The attempt at tackling a grandiose theme is present, as the title suite (which spans one half of the album) owes a great debt to Ayn Rand's Anthem, and would forever link Rush to Rand even long after there had ceased to be a link.

The second side contains shorter selections, such as the Middle Eastern-flavored "A Passage to Bangkok" and the album-closing rocker "Something for Nothing." 2112 is widely considered by Rush fans as their first true "classic" album, the first in a string of similarly high-quality albums.
Whereas Rush's first two releases, their self-titled debut and Fly By Night, helped create a buzz among hard rock fans worldwide, the more progressive third release, Caress of Steel, confused many of their supporters.
