At the first contest in 1956, each country was allowed to submit two three-minute (or less) songs, performed by inhabitants of the respective country.
Running since 1956, the Eurovision Song Contest (in French: Concours Eurovision de la Chanson) is an annual televised song contest with participants from numerous countries whose national television broadcasters are members of the European Broadcasting Union.
The first contest took place on May 24, 1956, when seven of the original invitees participated (the other three were disqualified for late entry).

 Eurovision Song Contest
The Eurovision Song Contest is a live, televised music competition that has received widespread ridicule since its debut in 1956.
Efforts to resuscitate the ESC as a viable musical forum have resulted in recent efforts to modernize the look and style of the contest and to encourage a more professional approach to promotion through the participation of the corporate music industry.
In their triumphant international debut on the ESC, Abba opted for English and a continentally-recognizable historical event with "Waterloo" in 1974.

From National Pride to Global Kitsch : the Eurovision Song Contest
On the one hand, the 1956-born ESC is a key element of EBU’s memory: it is linked to the very foundation of the organisation (1950) and it is decisive in establishing and promoting its identity that remains shaky.
A striking feature of ESC music is the wish to introduce new musical style (rap, techno…) but this always involves a shift from original models due to a certain amount of pastiche.
Consequently, the ESC seems to be doubly branded as belonging to TV entertainment and to the old-fashioned genre of popular songs.

 Historical Milestones
ESC goes multimedia: for the first time a commercial CD featuring all 24 ESC songs comes out, and the event is broadcast live on the Internet.
Sweden won, and ABBA was and will be the all time favourite of the ESC.
» The ESC reached a climax: ABBA's "Waterloo" turned out to be anything but a defeat.

 Opus // Music // Soul-Junk - 1956
But the real pleasure of "1956" is that it's as inventive and interesting lyrically as it is musically.
"1956" is primarily influenced by hip-hop, but Soul-Junk takes a "kitchen sink" approach to it all, throwing in elements of folk, jungle, country, downtempo, and techno.
Their music was the very definition of quirky, with band members all over the stage, playing Casio keyboards and children's toys before hitting the stage for a little breakdancing.

John, Little Willie --  Britannica Student Encyclopedia
One of the earliest and most influential soul singers, Little Willie John rose to fame with his recording of ‘Fever' (1956).
The song, which became a rhythm and blues standard, was also a huge hit for Peggy Lee in 1958 and was later sung by such diverse artists as Rita Coolidge, Madonna, and the Cramps.
His songs and poems are emotionally intense and realistic, and they show a remarkable command of poetic form, especially for one with so little formal education.
