<bb>>Rockb>bb>> and roll - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
<bb>>Rockb>bb>> and roll emerged as a defined musical style in America in the 1950s, though elements of <bb>>rockb>bb>> and roll can be heard in rhythm and blues records as far back as the 1920s.
Early <bb>>rockb>bb>> and roll combined elements of blues, boogie woogie, jazz and rhythm and blues, and is also influenced by traditional Appalachian folk music, gospel, Hillbilly and country and western.
In 1954, Elvis Presley recorded at Sam Phillips' Sun studios in Memphis, the regional hit "That's All Right, Mama." Elvis played a <bb>>rockb>bb>> and country and western fusion called rockabilly, which was characterized by hiccuping vocals, slapping bass and a spastic guitar style.

The Drive-by Truckers: Southern <bb>>Rockb>bb>> Opera - PopMatters Music Review
The influences for Southern <bb>>Rockb>bb>> Opera were many, most obviously the music and story of Lynyrd Skynyrd as well as a variety of arena <bb>>rockb>bb>> bands and the Truckers' own experiences.
Southern <bb>>Rockb>bb>> Opera's two discs are labeled "Act I" and "Act II": the first is an exploration of a young man's growing up in the South while the second recasts the Skynyrd story with him as the lead singer.
Southern <bb>>Rockb>bb>> Opera is a complex work, a cohesive text that functions as a Bildungsroman, a coming-of-age story; as an exploration of cultural issues that have defined the South; as an autobiography of the Drive-by Truckers; and as a reclaiming of Lynyrd Skynyrd's legend and music.

The Music Box: Drive-By Truckers - Southern <bb>>Rockb>bb>> Opera (Album Review)
Throughout Southern <bb>>Rockb>bb>> Opera, Drive-By Truckers takes its lyrical writing to the next level, and the three-guitar assault employed in its songs perfectly captures the sound of 1970s Southern arena <bb>>rockb>bb>> without ever sounding derivative or mocking.
Southern <bb>>Rockb>bb>> isn’t pretty, and nowhere is this more evident than in the music of the Athens, Georgia-based Dixie rockers Drive-By Truckers.
Rather than attempting an actual <bb>>rockb>bb>> opera with a linear story line (á la The Who’s Tommy), however, the Skynyrd story occupies less than half of the tracks on Southern <bb>>Rockb>bb>> Opera.

This album truly deserves the name "<bb>>rockb>bb>> opera" but not any stigma that might normally be attached to such a title.
When hearing the combination of a piano and the <bb>>rockb>bb>> song the name of Jim Steiman comes to mind and Queen must have been an influence for the vocal outbursts even though I’m not exactly a fan of that band and I do like this album.

Rolling Stone : Drive-By Truckers "Opera" Restaged
Initially released last fall, Southern <bb>>Rockb>bb>> Opera is something of a time machine, dragging listeners back to the Seventies through a pair of the decade's flagship institutions: Lynyrd Skynyrd and the <bb>>rockb>bb>> opera.
It's actually a significantly darker record than the <bb>>rockb>bb>> opera, but with this record we said if at any point in time we weren't having fun, we were going to walk away from it until we were ready to come back with a better attitude.
The double disc touches on the Skynyrd mystique, the allure of arena <bb>>rockb>bb>> (through a fictional Seventies teen and his band) and, as singer-guitarist Patterson Hood describes it, "the duality of the Southern Thing" -- the semi-nostalgic love/hate relationship between a man and a region.

If punk <bb>>rockb>bb>> was a social and musical phenomenon, it garnered little in the way of record sales (small specialty labels such as Stiff Records had released much of the punk music to date) or American radio airplay, as the radio scene continued to be dominated by mainstream formats such as disco and album-oriented <bb>>rockb>bb>>.

Southern <bb>>Rockb>bb>> Opera is a deadly serious record, an act of atonement from a musician who “came of age rebelling against the music of my high school parking lot.” 69 Love Songs is something else entirely: cheeky, parodic, a genre clusterfuck that plays like a mix tape by someone with a very eccentric record collection.
The title Southern <bb>>Rockb>bb>> Opera is both a great joke and exactly what the record delivers: a fiercely unironic two act fantasia about “the whole Skynyrd thing in its misunderstood glory,” with spoken interludes, printed libretto and a stomping three-guitar climax.
These are interventionist records, striving to resuscitate discredited forms: <bb>>rockb>bb>> opera, mid-tempo Southern boogie, the twinky sputter of analog synthesizers.
