Jimmy Eat Worlds <<<bb>>bb>bb>>>bb>b>bb>>bb>bb>>>>BLEEDb>bb>>bb>bb>>>bb>b>bb>>bb>bb>>>> AMERICAN is a touchy-feely love letter from a band to its record collection, including fragments of overt lyrical reference to everyone from Tommy James and the Beatles to John Mellencamp, Motley Crue, The Jesus and Mary Chain, and They Might Be Giants thrown in to double the point.

The album concludes with a long version of <<<bb>>bb>bb>>>bb>b>bb>>bb>bb>>>>Bleedb>bb>>bb>bb>>>bb>b>bb>>bb>bb>>>>, the only self penned piece (but in all responsible for 15 minutes of the 42 that this album is long).

Many of <<<bb>>bb>bb>>>bb>b>bb>>bb>bb>>>>Bleedb>bb>>bb>bb>>>bb>b>bb>>bb>bb>>>> American's songs would have sounded out of place on earlier JEW efforts, and to be truthful, were a little confusing to listen to at first.
But after a few listens, these songs started making sense, especially "The Authority Song," which is the first track I go to when I throw <<<bb>>bb>bb>>>bb>b>bb>>bb>bb>>>>Bleedb>bb>>bb>bb>>>bb>b>bb>>bb>bb>>>> American on.
I wasn't sure what to make of a song <bb>>likeb>bb>> "Your House," a mid-tempo pop ballad, or "The Authority Song," which not only starts off sounding <bb>>likeb>bb>> a John Mellencamp song but also contains the line "Put my last quarter on/ I play Authority Song," an obvious reference to Mellencamp's '83 hit.

For another, the lyrics are, well, lyrical - an impressionistic poem that could be a profound statement about the empty materialism of American culture, a snarling rant against television-induced boredom, or both.
This album is indeed "energetic, reflective, fun, earnest, cathartic, brooding" - the same set of adjectives people have been using to describe the very best rock and roll for the past half century.

This is a Led Zeppelin track and for me the least pleasing of the tracks on this album, mostly because of the yeah-he-heah part.
The album concludes with a long version of <<<bb>>bb>bb>>>bb>b>bb>>bb>bb>>>>Bleedb>bb>>bb>bb>>>bb>b>bb>>bb>bb>>>>, the only self penned piece (but in all responsible for 15 minutes of the 42 that this album is long).
Breathe is the first track that is recognizably Pink Floyd (although the previous tracks are all covers, with the exception of <<<bb>>bb>bb>>>bb>b>bb>>bb>bb>>>>Bleedb>bb>>bb>bb>>>bb>b>bb>>bb>bb>>>>).

Jimmy Eat World - a Review of The Phantom Tollbooth

Musically, <<<bb>>bb>bb>>>bb>b>bb>>bb>bb>>>>Bleedb>bb>>bb>bb>>>bb>b>bb>>bb>bb>>>> American is a bit of a departure from Clarity.
Whereas Clarity was slow-moving and sedate, <<<bb>>bb>bb>>>bb>b>bb>>bb>bb>>>>Bleedb>bb>>bb>bb>>>bb>b>bb>>bb>bb>>>> American is faster and more aggressive.
What this means in a practical sense is that Jimmy Eat World stand out less from the rest of modern rocktheyre starting to sound similar to other alternapop bands on the radio.
